PUPARAZZI - dog portraits by Robert Nowell

Okay we all know that dogs rule, right?  My first dog was amazing. He was a Welsh Border Collie named Prince. His full name was Prince Merlyn Emerest of Leaside so Prince worked nicely. Prince was so intelligent we should have enrolled him in Kumon. It was his eyes that got me, they had a twinkle that made me realise he knew exactly what was going on every minute. He was a great comfort to my mother during her battle with cancer, and when we lost her, he did the same for my Dad. Sadly we don't have anywhere near as many good photos of him as I would like. The next dog that stole my heart was my sisters. His name was Yosh and he was a black cockapoo. What a little character he was. We did get some great portraits to remember him by. My sis now has two standard poodles named Ren & Cozie and they rule the roost. My wife Heather and I are the proud parents of a West Highland Terrier named Morgan who shares our home with our very big and very lazy cat, Fozzie.
PUPPARRAZI is something of an extension of my 29 year photography business. I wanted to separate the two because I want to create dog portraits that are really lifestyle images of your pet. In the same way that I won't do cheesy portraits of kids in contrived sets, I want to photograph your dog in a casual relaxed way that brings out the essence of your dog's personality. That can be in studio or out of doors. I want to make friends with your pet before clicking the shutter. Anything else would just be bad manners.
No pets with Santa, no goofy sunglasses, just amazing images of your dog that lets his or her personality shine through.

More of Morgan

Okay I hope you don’t mind that I added some more of Morgan, she’s just too adorable not to post some of these….

February 14, 2012 - 2:25 am Virginia O'Hearn - Morgan is a cutie! I LOVE the pic you caught with her eyes closed and tongue out! As always great photos Rob!

Morgan, our wonderful Westie

It’s been just over a year since we took home our new puppy Morgan. She’s settled in and become a part of the family as if she’ always been here. When she first arrived as you’ll see in one of the photos she was completely dwarfed by our cat Fozzie. Their first meeting went well and today they are best buddies. Most mornings after they’ve eaten breakfast (often each other’s ) Morgan pushes her face into Fozzie’s and the cat proceeds to give the dog a wash from  head to toe. It makes us laugh every time we see it.  Last August we took Morgan camping with us and with her own doggie lifejacket on she came along for a canoe ride with us. Her interest in all things new wained quickly and she settled down at the bottom of the canoe for a snooze. She loves to go for early morning walks at Walker’s Creek park and looks forward to meeting up with local dogs like; Mollie, Ellie, Curly, Stubby to name a few.  Most of them tower over her but she gets right in there with the bigger dogs and usually races around them at top speed.  I hope you enjoy these photos of her from the first year.

We’re getting a puppy!!!!

Pretty excited to announce that we are going to pick up our new Westie in two days! We have named her Morgan and we’re getting her this Thursday . We’re  so excited!  When we entered the pen Heather was instantly surrounded by Westie pups. “How will we choose”, I wondered. Well it seems that our dog chose us instead because while the pack ran off to chase a toy one stayed behind with Heather and there was an instant bond. I’ll definitely be posting some pics soon of our new baby!

August 13, 2010 - 8:15 pm Virginia - So Rob; Long time no post here.........I need a puppy fix, haven't heard a word about Morgan in awhile......working on a new look for James, may take 2 more cuts to get it where we want it if we like it....... anyhow hope you are having a great summer and getting some time to relax in between all the weddings and stuff....talk soon Virginia

Schipperke, The Belgian barge dog

Meet Morse , a Schipperke, which is a breed that hails from Belgium. The breed is an allround  dog and historically were used as ratters and made their home on Belgian barges. Later on some royal ladies became fond of the smaller Schipperkes. Schipperkes are excellent boat dogs and are not prone to seasickness so they can be found around the world on powerboats and yachts. Schipperkes can often be headstrong and require solid training. Admittedly I was a bit concerned when I was told that Morse doesn’t care much for men and can at times be quite territorial. But once he had a chance to familiarize himself with my studio and me, and the two co op students he settled in nicely and we found him to be an adorable dog. His owner Dorothy brought him his snacks and squeaky toys and he was quite focussed on both, without becoming frenzied as some dogs can. I think his appearance can be deceiving as he’s a smaller dog but can look quite fierce. We were amazed at how much he had  wolf like head and fur. So here are the portraits of Morse the Schipperke.

April 8, 2010 - 6:05 am Kerri - Morse looks alert and energetic. Our 2 Belgian Sheperd Tervurens share many of the same characteristics....especially being head strong.

Tootsie

Tyler brought his pride and joy “Tootsie” into my studio  on a brisk, cold January day. It was dull and overcast and just generally one of those winter days that are just “Blah” . Tootsie was like a ray of sunshine. She is just so darn cute and energetic. Tootsie was so energetic that she played leapfrog off the posing table which is not a good idea if you have such short little legs. She was being coaxed with cheese and once she saw cheese in the room she became fixated on making sure she got every single crumb. I  figured it was worth trying to go outside, so we set off for the park which is a stones throw from the studio. She was pretty happy to be outside and when other dogs came by on their walk she barked and lunged to let them know she was boss lady in this park.

JJ

Meet JJ who comes to us by way of my co op student Devin. JJ is of course a Shih Tzu which is the perfect lap dog especially if they’re your dog. I haven’t had much luck getting a Shih Tzu to befriend me, which I don’t take personally, it just means that they are more comfortable with their own people. At least that’s my experience anyway. Now JJ to be honest just didn’t much care for heights. What I mean is that JJ wasn’t thrilled to be up on a table which is how I typically photograph the small dogs. After some small talk and explaining that treats were soon to follow, JJ like most dogs patiently let me snap away.  We are now big facebook friends and will likely do coffee and  dog biscuits soon.027

March 18, 2010 - 12:58 pm Jing - Love how he rocks the hair-light!

Sky

Pug. The name is perfect!  I have to admit I can’t look at a pug without bringing up the image of the talking alien pug in “Men in Black” . Sky however got me past that in a minute, cause as soon he got in the studio he hurled herself at me for a facelicking fest!  What an adorable dog!  Sky is still a bit of a puppy  and cute as a button so I had to get in close for some beauty shots. :)

December 31, 2009 - 7:16 am Carolyn - HI Rob...your talents never cease to amaze me! These shots are absolutely stunning! Guinness would make some great shots, especially in the snow...if only I could get him to behave a bit better! Carolyn

January 2, 2010 - 1:02 pm Virginia O'Hearn - These are great! Looks like Sky is quite the entertainer allowing you to capture the singing and dancing skills and finally giving you the perfect diva shot........what a great translation of Sky.

January 3, 2010 - 7:34 am Gill Taylor - Absolutely gorgeous ... totally cute ! Gill

January 4, 2010 - 10:53 am Seann Alexander - As he is tearing apart the same teddy bear he's had since we got him, I call out: "Sky! Who's that on TV?" He gives me the pug head tilt, and then lays down on the floor all cute. I wasn't able to bring him to my fathers side of the family for christmas, but I was able to show them the 4th picture and my cousin fell in love with him! These illustrate Skyline's personality to the very last detail. Thanks Rob!

January 6, 2010 - 7:29 pm Julie Oakes - These are really excellent photos-I have to say I just love the laughing pug pup! Well done, O Dog Whisperer!

January 6, 2010 - 8:13 pm Barbara Colling - Hi Rob: Love these pictures - what a great direction to take your photography in. Particularly like the first and fifth pictures of Sky. I like seeing the focus on the eyes with the face partically cut away and I'm a sucker for yawning pets - they're in their most vulnerable therefore adorable state. Have you attempted Catarazzi yet? I'm a cat person teehee. All the best.......Barb

March 18, 2010 - 1:00 pm Jing - Genius use of the stripes and the wrinkles.

Roxy

I had thought Bulldogs were a quiet dog that sort of chugged along looking for the next place to sit down. That is until I met Roxy! What a bundle of energy. Roxy jumped and ran and was totally mad for sticks. She was not in the least intimidated when I offered her a large fallen tree branch and wrestled it from me. She then chewed the end of it into submission just to let the rest of the forest know who was boss. Our session was at Balls Falls and most of the leaves were still on the ground so in spite of it being cool and damp we had an awesome session. Thanks Venessa for introducing me to Roxy!

WOOF!

December 30, 2009 - 10:42 am Virginia O'Hearn - Hi Rob! Well let me tell you that Roxy sure looks like a happy girl. That first pic with her eyes closed and smiling to beat the band is what we pet owners live for.........and whoever says a dog does not smile needs to take a closer look and you will see the abject pleasure and happiness captured by your lense. Virginia

December 30, 2009 - 5:57 pm Ashley - Hey Rob Love the pictures! I would love get Tucker photographed once he gets some more training in...he's a bit of a handful right now. By the way you should consider getting a Wheaten Terrier...not that I'm biased or anything lol

January 2, 2010 - 7:47 am Bronwyn - Rob, these are too hilarious! I absolutely love the first one of Roxy. We're going to need to bring our Roxy (a German Shepherd/Doberman pup) in for some shots! This is absolutely fantastic. You've captured this happy little pup so well!

January 4, 2010 - 10:46 am Seann Alexander - One of the iconic pictures is when Puparazzi is linked from facebook, that gigantic tongue and mug show up. Roxy warms your heart and must make anyone who does not own a dog want to jump up and into the snow to get one. Amazing captures of an amazing member of the family!

January 18, 2010 - 8:24 am Vennessa Desrochers (Roxy's Owner) - I am so pleased to hear that others are enjoying Roxy just as much as Anthony and I. She sure is a handful, and Robert captured her personality. Thank you so much for taking some amazing pictures of our very hyper bulldog :)

Justin

036015040Justin has the honours of being the first post. He belongs to my retoucher and friend Stacey. Justin usually runs when I visit and peeks at me from around corners. He was much braver for his portrait session and seemed to find the whole process interesting. Is it possible he’s just having me on when I visit?006046

December 30, 2009 - 10:46 am Virginia O'Hearn - Justin is a cutie Chinese Crested......I think he pokes around the corner checking for Fozzie....lol however the intelligence is captured very well.....I love the last pic......

December 30, 2009 - 11:14 am Laurel Overing - What a great job capturing Justin's refined personality! I particularly like the third photo where he is looking right at you with the attitude of 'we all know who the best looking puppy in the world is'. The photos are truly awesome. This is such a precious way to save puppy-hood memories for years and years to come. Good luck with this new venture!

December 30, 2009 - 11:50 am Michele - Oh my gosh... how beautiful are these images? I love love love the close ups!

January 2, 2010 - 8:12 am Charlotte Leonard - OMG I think my heart just melted!! I don't think that dog photography gets any better than this =D

January 3, 2010 - 7:35 am Gill Taylor - This little dog is just pure gorgeousness ... all that hair ! Beautifully captured too :)

January 4, 2010 - 10:40 am Seann Alexander - It's hard to realize that this puppy isn't a person. Robert Nowell really does bring the anthropomorphic characteristics out in Justin on the screen. Absolutely adorable!

Welcome to Puparazzi!

Finally after months of thought and decisions on how to go about adding a new division to my business, it’s ready to go. I always knew that my dog portraiture would deserve it’s own area, in fact it’s own site. I should mention that while Puparazzi is obviously a haven for dog lovers, I am not about to discriminate against cats. Don’t get me wrong, I like cats too, but let’s face it,  any conversation with a cat is going to be a one way discussion. Cats I’m pretty sure are still annoyed about no longer being worshipped as they once were in Egypt. Dogs on the other hand still rule as man’s best friend as they have for centuries. So animal lovers unite, let the photo sessions begin!

December 30, 2009 - 10:55 am stacey - Awww my little boy! how adorable he is! Thanks to shooting him..err should I say, thanks for the photo session....shooting & dog in the same sentence sounds SO bad! LOL Great job Rob! I love this new avenue your taking. People's love their pets and I hope you get a variety of cool pets to shoot...oh..have photo sessions with ;) All the best in 2010! Cheers! Stacey

December 30, 2009 - 4:32 pm Roxanne Goar - Robert i think dog photography is a fantastic idea!!! They become so quickly part of our families! it is nice to be able to keep the photos as keepsakes. Roxy and Justin both seem so vibrant and you have done such a wonderful job showing their personalities through your lens. i am partial to Roxy but hey it could be because i am partial to her name!! i would love to see what kind of pictures you can come up with for our Duke, our other baby. i look forward to seeing the next sessions posted on this web site! having you photograph our wedding almost 5 years ago and then my maternity photos this summer i have no doubt this new venture will be a great success for you. once again you have the magic touch!! ~Roxanne

January 1, 2010 - 4:16 pm Vanessa - I LOVE the name! So cute. Anyone who has a pet knows that they are a very special part of the family. It only makes sense that they should have their own portrait sessions. Great idea Rob. Love how you have captured their character in these shots. Make sure you offer a puppy planner!-LOL All the best with this new addition to your business!-Vanessa
